The old laundry room above a flat in a 1930s residential block on Mill Row, Haggerston has been transformed into an open plan, duplex apartment for a young family.
A new opening and stair provide access from the original flat into the loft space above. Conceptually we tried to create a continuous flow of space between the two levels. Rather than simply partitioning the space above, we used a series of embedded volumes tucked beneath the rafters to provide a bathroom and a small bedroom whilst the remainder of the space forms the master bedroom.
A singular element of joinery, monolithic in its appearance, starts in the lounge and ultimately forms the wardrobe in the master bedroom, partitioning the space.
During the works the roof lining was removed to reveal the original structural features, which are now celebrated as part of the space.
