Montcalm Marble Arch

The Montcalm Marble Arch is a 5* hotel set behind a Grade II* listed terrace. The property sits within the Portman Estate Conservation Area on a graceful crescent a short distance from London’s Hyde Park and the West End.

In 2017, Westminster City Council approved our plans for an infill extension to provide 9 additional bedrooms alongside the wider refurbishment of the hotel comprising a new lobby, reception, restaurant and lounge.

The design for the extension at the Montcalm Marble Arch mirrors the ziggurat form of the existing hotel, which was constructed in the 1970s behind the original Georgian facade, incorporating cast glass and pigmented concrete panels to create a chequerboard effect of solid and translucent elements, providing privacy for guests yet still allowing ample daylight into the bedrooms.

The hotel lobby will feature an elegant marble floor which we have been designing in direct collaboration with the craftsmen and quarries in northern Italy, with each tile individually cut by computer-controlled machinery before being set by hand. Behind reception, botanical art set in plaster by renowned artist Rachel Dein will reinforce the hotel’s relationship with nearby Hyde Park.

Our design will re-establish the hotel’s relationship with Wallenberg Place by reinstating the crescent internally as a principal axis. At one end, the Morning Room will provide an elegant space for high tea while a private meeting room for business guests. The interiors are designed to evoke memories of classical London – elegance and timelessness – with a contemporary edge.
